Untitled (Real Floors 2), 2008
"Mind the Gap: Noticing the Unnoticed,” Gallery of Contemporary Art, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Natural oak wood grain contact paper. Approx. 240 square feet. Here I covered the entire vinyl tile floor of the entryway with natural oak wood grain contact paper cut into strips to appear as parquet flooring. This entryway is a non-functional office that is a transitory space between the main hallway of the science building where the gallery is located, the main gallery itself, the director’s office, and the drawing studio. This space also goes sadly neglected, as the University believes that it is the Gallery’s responsibility and the Gallery thinks that it is the University’s property – so neither side will clean the space, resulting in an extremely grungy vinyl tile floor that had not been mopped in years. Because no one claims the office, it is a kind of invisible space; while everyone must pass through the it to get to the main gallery, no one takes notice of it or its neglected state. For my project, I cleaned the floor (as best as I could with two helpers), and transformed the floor into faux oak parquet. While only people who are intimately familiar with the space might notice the change, even first time visitors will have a different psychological experience entering the main gallery.
