Untitled (On the Ideology of Snow: Shifts (Part 1), 2011

Kiehle Gallery. St Cloud State University, MN. Video projection, plywood, contact paper, fabric, speakers. Overall installation 8’x24’. Collaboration with Gaetano Cunsolo. The gallery has one wall of diagonal windows that face the main hallway and entrance to the building. There is also a back patio with windows and a door, accessible from the back corner of the gallery. We decided to close the gallery to visitors and collapse the space between the back patio windows and the front windows by projecting from inside the gallery a 2h30m video of a performance that involved shoveling snow on the patio onto the windows in an effort to completely cover them. The rest of the main gallery windows were covered in cheap plywood, the kind used for temporary purposes in construction. Those using the building would pass by at various moments throughout the day and see the windows in the video at different stages of being covered and uncovered, from our shoveling action to an abstract atmosphere.
