“Nothing at the End of the Lane,” Soap Factory Gallery, Minneapolis, MN. Various wood grain contact paper. Dimensions vary. The original wood floor of the Soap Factory galleries has numerous imperfections; different sized holes from purposeful alterations and holes from accident or decay. Most of these holes have been filled or covered with some kind of material (masonite board, other kinds of wood, vinyl tiles, metal, concrete), either in a neat, deliberate way or in a haphazard, temporary way. My intervention involved covering the surface of some of the patches that were already in the space, sometimes matching the contact paper to the original floor, and sometimes matching the contact paper to the cheap particle board used to patch nearby holes. This project addresses our assumptions about the various layers of intentionality within the residue of care and neglect apparent in the space, and how temporary actions can become permanent. |
