Untitled (Dirty Walls 1), 2007

"Rotten Sun," Minneapolis College of Art and Design, MN. Paint and drywall. 12”x12”x¼”. A ¼” thick square of paint was removed from the gallery wall to reveal at the edges all the colorful and textured layers of paint that have accumulated in stark contrast to the smooth original drywall underneath. This project is in response to an essay by Tom Finkelpearl, "On the Ideology of Dirt," in which he uses the restoration of the South Street Seaport in Manhattan as an example to define "dirty" and "clean" environments and experiences, and as a metaphor for what was happening in the art world in the 1980s. Removing layers of dirt, in essence, removes the evidence of history.
